The One About Sourdough Bread

Mmmm sourdough bread!

Is there anything more yummy?

Perhaps, but we've gone on a sourdough baking kick!

And it isn't even me!

Recently, the fiance and I have been discussing our future and what we ideally would like in our marriage, family, life, etc. One thing that we're both pretty passionate about, and slowly making steps to achieve, is living self-sustaining and being aware of home preparedness skills.

I love the shows Alaska: The Last Frontier and most recently Alaskan Bush People, which both air on Discovery Channel, because of their homesteading lifestyle and down-to-earth way of living. I idolize their way of living and hope to one day do some form of it.

Eventually, the fiance and I will be moving to land and live a small piece of the homesteading lifestyle. Until then, I'll continue to watch my shows and make plans for around the house.

Back to the topic on hand though, sourdough bread. With the conversation of our future, we talked about making things from scratch.

Check out the awesome root soup below that the fiance made in his cast iron dutch oven over coals in my fireplace one night (we ate it with elk rib eye seared in a cast iron skillet)!

So the fiance started to make sourdough from scratch using this recipe from Alton Brown and its the yummiest bread I've ever had!

Following the recipe, the fiance prepares the loaf of sourdough bread and lets it sit out for roughly 14-18 hours, exposed to light, until it becomes sour (sowah).

There's something wonderful about watching someone you love bake bread. Granted, it does take two days to make, but he's been making one every weekend so they've been lasting throughout the week.

After that, he covers it with a towel and lets it sit in the dark for another four hours.

When it has sat in the dark and the oven & dutch oven has preheated to 450 degrees, he cooks it covered for 30 minutes, removes the lid, and finishes baking it with another 15 minutes.

Final Product!
